The history of Stone Hedges Golf Course is very rich and interesting. In the year 1964, the Groton Golf and Recreation Association was built to provide a platform to the workers of Smith Corona to spend some quality time with the family members. At that time, there was no recreation center in the area of Cortland-Groton to help the employees to relax. There was an issue of funds to run the golf course but after many efforts and numerous ups and downs, the 18-hole course was opened finally in the year 1967. The golf course was funded by the federal government’s Farmers Home Administration to provide all the facilities to the guests. The SCM’s Employee Club also donated a handsome amount to run the project.
In the year 1983, it was decided by the association to run the golf course by making it affordable for the residents of rural areas. The swimming pool and the tennis court were not the part of the offerings at that time. Now, the golf course is totally dependent on its members who pay annual fees to run the club. The club also generates revenue through car rentals, green fees, bars, restaurants and also through the organization of different special events like parties and marriages.
